Co-sponsored by the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology (BCLT) and the Berkeley Technology Law Journal (BTLJ).

The Twelfth Annual Symposium will explore the role of intellectual property, and in particular patent law, on entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship.

We have invited speakers from a broad range of disciplines, including economics, law, business and other fields. We have also invited attorneys, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists who have been actively involved in the information technology, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and green technology sectors.

At the Symposium we will also introduce BCLT's project on IP & entrepreneurship, launched this year with the generous support of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. We will discuss the current state of knowledge about the field of IP & entrepreneurship and our plans for empirical and theoretical research.

10.5 units of MCLE credit will be availble for attendees of the symposium.

Conference website is now available.

The Place of the iConsumer in EU and US Law
Protecting Consumers of Copyright Protected Content
December 14 & 15, 2008
The Institute for Information Law, Amsterdam

Organized by: The Institute for Information Law (IViR) at the University of Amsterdam, in cooperation with the Berkeley Centre for Law & Technology (BCLT) at the University of California, Berkeley.

The objective of this workshop is to discuss and compare current and future approaches – in the context of consumer law and copyright law – in the European Union and the United States, concerning the legal protection of consumers of copyright protected content (iConsumers). The workshop will focus on the potential of consumer law to accommodate the concerns of the iConsumer. The needs of consumers of copyright protected content are high on the agenda of the ongoing review of the European consumer law acquis by the European Commission. This workshop will contribute to the discussion by examining if the existing instruments of consumer law respond to the requirements of consumers of copyright protected content, and if not, is there room for improvement? The main goal of the workshop is to confront the consumer law approach with the more commonly discussed approach of internalising user-related questions directly into copyright law.
This event is part of a series of joint events organised by the BCLT and IViR, and a follow-up to the conference on “Copyright, DRM Technology and Consumer Protection” that was held at UC Berkeley in March 2007.
